N is for November

The month of my birth.

A Scorpio if you believe in star signs, which I don’t.

A Millennial.

For the first time experiencing fashion trends coming back around.

And Gen Z is now wearing my outfits and calling them vintage.

Outrageous.

I ditched the skinny jeans a while ago, and my thighs and stomach are grateful for the release.

And alas no handkerchief tops for me as my breasts have long since given up the ghost after two kids and a season of breastfeeding. There is no strapless bra that would give me the lift of Eva Herzigová. It’s less ‘Hello boys’ and more ‘Over-the-shoulder boulder holder’.

Of course, fashion isn’t the only thing we were first to.

We were the first generation to grow up with the internet, and we remember the excitement.

Remember begging your mum to get off the phone so you could get on the dial-up to send a message on MSN or download a song on Napster.

What a time to be alive.

And what has that digital literacy done for me?

Well, it came in handy when I started writing words for apps. But I’m still more comfortable with a mobile phone than a drill.

We’re also the unlucky generation, who experienced recession, unemployment and lower wages.

Again, what a time to be alive.

Not to be too miserable, though. When we can find work, we want it to mean something. It’s less about the money and more about the value in what we do.

And in this, my birthday month, I’m still searching for that value.

I’ve recently updated my CV, and the meandering path from copywriter to PR, shop assistant to resourcing, then back again to writing, shows so clearly that I’ve never stood still for long.

The winding road that is my CV reflects the itchy feet of someone searching.

Searching for what?

More than a pay cheque – maybe?

More than a job title – perhaps?

More than … I’m still working on that bit.

And now, in my birthday month, another year older, the search continues…but at least I’ve got the comfy jeans and a bra that does the heavy lifting.

What a time to be alive.
